Let's face it, Mehmet Cengiz Oz, also known as "Dr. Oz", has taken the world by storm. There is no point in denying it or trying to fight it, love him or hate him, Dr. Oz is here to stay. One has to appreciate the awareness of the many health benefits of proper nutrition and supplementation the popular television host preaches to millions of viewers every day.  The main subject of interest that the majority of his viewers tune in for each week is weight loss.  Dr. Oz has recommened many all natural products that help reduce overall body fat content and increase energy.
Raspberry Ketone is an organic compound that produces the smell of raspberies. Recently, however, it has been found that raspberry ketones can help with weight management. Raspberry ketone can help the efficiency of the metabolism by increasing the body's core temperature and in so doing increasing the body's fat burning abilities. Raspberry ketones work well with weight loss products and energy enhancement products to promote energy and metabolism during exercise. Raspberry ketones are also noted for their ability to encourage consistent and jitter-free energy.
Recent Studies have shown that taking African Mango supplements can help to reduce appetite, burn fat, increase energy, and help regulate the efficieny of the hormone leptin. All of these properties can have a significant impact on weight loss and weight management efforts.  For thousands of years green tea has been used in Asian cultures to treat everything from headaches to depression, and recent findings have shown that it can have substantial benefits for weight loss. Green tea is high in anti-oxidants and is thought to help with energy and hunger.  Green tea is also increases thermogenesis (heat production), therby making it easier to burn fat. Kelp is an amazing source of vitamins and mineral and is known to help support the nervous system and the thyroid. It is also known to help boost the metabolism, thus reducing the chances of weight gain. Apple cider vinegar can help promote a healthy digestive system. It helps with digestion and elimination promoting regularity. This process can help one push through weight loss platueaus or "sticking points" caused by an unwanted buildup. While it is known that an excessive intake from all macronutrients, including carbohydrates, contributes to the development of obesity, scientists are studying how starch blockers may affect weight loss.  Phaselous vulgaris, the clinical name for white kidney bean extract, is the principle ingredient in products known as starch blockers.  The concept behind these dietary supplements is to prevent a natural enzyme in saliva and the pancreas, called alpha-amylase, from breaking down carbs into simple sugars which could prevent the body from absorbing carb calories and thereby promote weight loss. Cordyceps mushroom extract has the ability to replenish energy, improve endurance, and stimulate the immune system. Moreover, because of the adrenal support Cordyceps extracts provide, it may be especially useful for people who are under significant stress.
When combined, these all natural supplements can help increase energy, promote weight loss, and improve overall quality of life. There are no known side effects to these extracts and they are safe to take with any prescription medications. Products that contain a combination of these ingredients can be found at local health food and vitamin stores. Make sure to visit a store with a knowledgeable staff that are certified health professionals, and do not forget tune in to the "Dr. Oz" show to keep up to date on the latest natural supplements available!

Many doctors are now suggesting a diet high in fiber to help reduce cholesterol, balance blood sugar levels, and lose weight. Fiber supports intestinal health, as well as curbs one's appetite by creating a feeling of "fullness", which makes it a great option to consume in between meals to avoid over eating. However, there are many forms of fiber available, so which one is the best?
Psyllium Husk is an excellent source of soluble fiber, supports cardiovascular health, and helps maintain regularity. Pysllium is a true dietary fiber, even though it is classified by some as a laxative or mucilaginous fiber, and is a convenient way to increase intake of dietary fiber because of its high mucilage content. This bulking agent swells considerably when added to liquid, which can help to support healthy gastrointestinal transit time. This bulking action and healthy transit time can play an important role in maintaining healthy gastrointesinal function.
PolyGlycopleX, also referred to as "PGX", is Glucomannan Fiber from Konjac Root. Glucomannan has been shown in studies to mantain healthy cholesterol levels, support regularity, and promote a feeling of fullness. Glucomannan is a soluble, bulk-forming fiber derived from the Konjac Root. Glucomanna can provide temporary relief of constipation and may help to maintain serum lipid levels already within the healthy range. In addition, because Glucomannan helps to promote satiety (the feeling of fullness), it can be an effective addition to a weight management program that includes a healthy, low calorie, low glycemic diet and exercise program.
White Chia Seeds, which have been widely publicized in the news and on popluar TV shows such as "Dr. OZ",  are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and Fiber. Two-thirds of Chia Seeds are comprised of Omega-3, however they are also an excellent source of Omega-6, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and protein. Chia Seeds can be eaten on their own or added to salads, cereals, yogurts, and protein shakes to boost their nutritional content. Chia Seeds are inexpensive and easily found in vitamin and health food stores.
With a large percent of the population being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and at risk for cardiovascular disease, Fiber makes a strong case as a preventative measure to reduce the likelyhood of developing these conditions. If losing weight and increasing overall health is the goal, fiber is a must add to any diet or exercise routine. Remember to drink plenty of water, up to a gallon a day, when consuming a diet high in fiber, to ensure regularity and reduce cravings in between meals.

Summer time is here, trips to the beach, river, and pool are upon us, as well as weddings, festivals, and partys. Procrastination, combined with busy schedules, leave us susceptible to waiting until the last minute to get ready. There are natural supplements available that can aid in water loss in as little as three to five days allowing the bikini or dress that has been in the closet for the past year to fit comfortably and give the body a more tone and defined appearance. However, many times these "quick fixes" do not last and the body goes back to retaining water and feeling bloated a few days later. We are going to discuss what supplements are recommended for optimal water loss and how to keep it gone for good.
Prickly Chaff Flower Extract is naturally derived from a shrub that grows throughout India. Prickly Chaff is a potent diuretic that has been shown to combat urinary tract infections and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Uva-Ursi is a plant commonly called Bearberry. Uva-ursi extract contains arbutin, a natural compound with strong diuretic and antimicrobial properties. Dandelion Extract contains powerful diuretic compounds called taraxasterols that increase the secretion of excess water. Dandelion is one of the most popular natural diuretics but also works as an anti-inflammatory agent and natural treatment for high blood pressure. Potassium Aspartate is a potassium salt that is essential for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance throughout the body. Potassium is an essential mineral responsible for a wide variety of metabolic functions. As an electrolyte, it aids in the maintenance of enzyme structures and fluid balance. Potassium also regulates muscle contractions, heart rate, and blood pressure. Vitamin B6 is essential in balancing sodium and potassium levels in the body and also responsible for the production of monamine neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine. Juniper Berry is primarily known as a botanical support for healthy kidneys, bladder, urine flow, prostate and urethra, as well as overall genitourinary tract health in both men and women. The diuretic action of the juniper berry is attributed to its essential oil, especially terpinene-4-ol, which is said to accelerate the filtration activity of the kidneys.
When combined all of these ingredients can help reduce the amount of subcutaneous (under the skin) fluid in the body. Subcutaneous fluid can reduce the appearance of lean muscle definition and leave a smooth, flat appearance to one's physique. Make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration when using a product that contains a blend of these herbs, vitamins, and minerals. The biggest mistake one can make is to drink less water when trying to cut water weight. For ever gallon of water a person consumes, the body will excrete a gallon and a half! In order to keep the water weight off after using one of these products, a minimum of a gallon of water  should be consumed daily. Try not to procrastinate this year, exercise for 30-60 minutes daily, eat several small meals through out the day, and drink no less than 8 to 10 glasses of water in a 24 hour period, and the body will mantain a dry, lean appearance all year long!

Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day has been proven to help promote weight loss, reduce body fat percentage, and increase overall lean muscle in an individual. However, consuming a well balanced small meal, consisting of food, every three to four hours can prove to be a difficult task. One of the most popular methods being used today is to replace a meal with a low calorie, high protein drink or shake. Although a great option, consuming these meal replacement shakes can become monotonous over a long period of time, which can tempt one to stray from their healthy diet and over consume calories. There are low calorie high protein “snacks” available in various forms that can help keep things fresh, thus reducing the likely hood of “cheating” on one’s diet.
An ideal caloric ratio for these snacks would be one that has approximately 150-300 calories with 45% of the calories coming from complex carbohydrates, 35% from protein, and 20% from fat. For example, if one of these meal replacements is 250 calories, it should consist of around 20-30 grams of complex carbohydrates (5 grams of sugar or less), 15-25 grams of protein, and 5-10 grams of fat. Protein bars are a great way to reduce appetite and increase protein intake. Some protein bars can be high in calories and sugar though, so be sure to read the label and choose a bar that is low in sugar and saturated fat. High protein oatmeal is a great healthy breakfast option.  The complex carbohydrates in the oatmeal will help energize your day and the fiber from the oats will reduce cravings. High protein oatmeal is low in sugar and available in many great tasting flavors such as maple brown sugar, apple cinnamon, banana walnut, and vanilla. Protein Jello has been gaining popularity, especially with bariatric and weight loss surgery patients, as a low calorie, fat free, high protein snack. Protein Jello contains zero cholesterol, sugar alcohol, soy, lactose, fat, aspartame, GMO, egg, yeast, wheat, gluten, or preservatives.  In addition, the Collagen in the Jello helps to improve hair, skin, and nail appearance. High Protein Pudding is a great option to use for dessert or a late night snack without over consuming calories. Protein Pudding is a favorite snack among many because it satisfies the urge for “sweets” without the unwanted calories from sugar.
By snacking throughout the day, the odds of consuming more calories than burned in a day are greatly reduced, resulting in weight loss and an overall healthier looking physique. Studies have shown that individuals that “pick” on a little food here and there all day long, on average weigh less than those that consume 2 or 3 large meals a day. Always make sure to drink plenty of water, and eat before and after long periods of physical activity, so grab a meal replacement and snack away!

Popular television shows such as "Doctor Oz" have been creating awareness of the many health benefits of using natural supplements. One of the catagories of supplements that have recentely been showcased is "Super Foods." Super Foods consist of a wide variety of items such as plant-based and raw vegan protein powders, coconut oil, Cacao powder, Raw Chocolate, Chlorophyll, Barely Grass Juice, Spirulina, Brewer's Yeast, Royal Jelly, and Bee Pollen. All of these products are Gluten Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Hypo-Allergenic, and Non-GMO.
Raw Protein powders that contain a blend of Pea protein, Cranberry protein, Hemp protein or Whole Grain Brown Rice protein are highly recommended for making healthy smoothies. These ingredients when combined create a unique, raw, plant-based protein with a complete amino acid profile, exceptionaly high in Glutamine, Arginine, Lysine, Luecine, and branch chain amino acids. These protein powders are an easily digestible, nutritent-dense super food.
Cacao trees bear large fruits that are around a foot long, each containing 20-40 seeds or cacao beans. Cacao Powder is high in protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats making it an excellent high-energy source and also a good source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper, and calcium. Cacao, also known as raw Chocolate, when combined with cinnamon, maca, cayenne, and vanilla coconut oil makes an energy rich super food that is great in smoothies, with fruit, nuts, or by the spoonful.
Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is a natural source of "good fats", lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids which the body metabolizes efficiently and converts to energy rather than storing as fat. Coconut oil is a traditional dietary staple of the people of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Coconut oil contains no trans-fats and when combined with essential fatty acids makes a perfect addition to an overall healthy lipid program to lower cholesterol and reduce body fat percentage.
Brewer's Yeast is an excellent source of protein and several B-Vitamins. Many people take Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen for energy and stamina, but it is also taken widely for weight loss, anti aging, hormonal regulation, reproductive health and more. Organic Juice powder, such as Barley Grass Juice, contain high concentrations of valuable nutritents, including chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and natural enzymes. Chlorella is a green single celled microalgae that contains the highest concentrations of chlorophyll known. Chlorella also supplies high levels of Beta-Carotene, mixed Carotenoids, Vitamin C, Iron, and Protein. Spirulina contains the highest protein and beta-carotene levels of all green superfoods, and is also a rich source of GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid), a popular fatty acid with numerous health benefits. In addition, it is the highest known vegetable source of B-12 and provides optimum levels of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, cell salts, amino acids enzymes.
Combining these all natural "Super Foods" from the earth can help increase energy, improve quality of life,  and could reduce the risk for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Super Foods are a great way to reduce the amount of saturated fats in one's diet thus lowering cholesterol and overall triglyceride count. They promote a feeling of "fullness" and can reduce appetite and promote weight loss. Try a "Super Food" supplement today and feel Super!

It is that time of year again, everyone will be signing up for gym memberships and starting new "fad" diets in hopes of losing weight. This year instead of wandering around the gym and grocery store aimlessly like a rutterless ship, try following a gameplan that is scientifically proven to produce results. Realistic goal setting is the first step to success, as well as taking advantage of all the resources that are available. A balanced mix of cardiovascular and resistance training combined with a low calorie, low glycemic meal plan and natural supplements will increase the odds of achieving one's personal weight loss goals.
In order to lose weight, more calories must be burned than consumed, period. This has been scientifically proven time and time again. Exercise increases thermogensis in the body resulting in more calories being burned than when at rest. There is a segment of the population that has physical limitiations preventing them from exercising. This is where nutrition and natural supplementation comes into play. For example, if a person sets a realistic goal of losing 10 pounds a month, They would have to consume one thousand less calories a day than they are currently consuming. One pound of fat equals 3500 calories, so if a person consumes 1000 less calories a day then there are currently taking in, they will lose one pound every 3-4 days, resulting in approximately a ten pound reduction in weight over the course of a month. An easy way to consume one thousand less calories a day, is to consume a low calorie, low glycemic meal replacement two to three times a day in place of a meal that would typically consist of 500 or more calories. In addition to using natural meal replacements, there are all natural metabolism boosters available that help increase thermogenesis and resting metabolic rate resulting in more calories being burned. When choosing a meal replacement or metabolsim booster, make sure to seek advice from a place that has the knowledge and education to suggest the best product that will not interact with prescription medications or cause any unwanted side effects.
A great example of a low calorie, low glycemic meal replacement, would be 100% Whey Protein Isolate powder that is sweetned with Stevia. This would ensure proper absorption and reduce cravings in between meals. A blend of Green tea, Acai fruit with a 4:1 concentrated ratio, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Kelp is a great all natural metabolism booster that has zero side effects and will increase energy and thermogensis. Furthermore, using a natural cleansing product before embarking on this journey is a great way to drop the first five to ten pounds in as little as a week. A good all natural seven day clease will consist of a mixture of fiber and herbs that will detoxify the colon, kidneys, liver, lungs, and digestive system. Make an effort to  drink plenty of water; for every gallon of water that is consumed the body will excrete a gallon and a half!
When combining these methods for weight loss success, there is virtually no chance of failure; Although a level of commitment must be accounted for by the indvidiual wishing to achieve results. If that means hiring a personal trainer or seeking advice from a nutrition expert to get started on the right track, by all means do so, this will only increase one's odds of losing weight and keeping it off for good. Do not become a statistic this year, make the right choices for a healthy lifestyle in 2012!

In the past, the majority of the articles I have wrote has pertained to losing weight and decreasing body fat percentage in one way or another. Considering that recent studies have shown that over 60% of the population is currently either overweight or clinically obese, I felt I was somewhat obligated to address this growing problem, and help prevent it from further damaging people’s health. However, this month I am turning to the opposite direction and going to focus on the smaller percentage of the population (get it? “Smaller”) that is considered underweight or “hard gainers.”

The principles to gaining weight are actually very similar to losing weight in theory; In order to lose weight one must burn more calories than consumed (eaten), well in order to gain weight one must consume more calories than burned (through physical activity). The problem with most weight gain formulas is that they are loaded with way too many calories from fats and sugars. Companies do this to improve taste, but an improper caloric ratio can actually raise body fat percentage which lowers the overall effectiveness of the product. An ideal caloric ratio for gaining lean muscle mass, without adding body fat is 45% complex (good) carbohydrates, 35% protein, and 20% healthy fats. For example, if a weight gain shake contained 600 total calories, ideally it should contain approximately 60-80 grams of complex carbohydrates, 45-55 grams of protein, and 10-15 grams of fat. Also, the sugar content should be 10 grams or less and saturated fat should be 3 grams or less. Make sure to pay attention to the cholesterol and sodium content as well. Try to keep cholesterol under 20mg, and sodium at 100mg or less.

The type of protein used in weight gain formulas is important as well. A blend of slow digesting and fast digesting proteins is ideal for gaining lean muscle. Ion Exchanged Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Casein protein, and Egg protein is the perfect combination. A high amino acid profile will insure that proper protein synthesis occurs, and added digestive enzymes will help with the absorption of the extra calories. Maximum results occur when consumed at bedtime, due to the fact less calories are being burned during sleep resulting in a calorie surplus. If a person can take in one thousand more calories a day than they burn, they will gain a pound every 3 to 4 days, which will provide the added weight gain desired. Furthermore, added essential fatty acids or lipids (good fats), such as flax seed oil, can keep you in an anabolic or muscle building state throughout the night.

For the majority of the population, gaining weight is easy, but for the individuals with higher than normal resting metabolic rates, adding the lean muscle required for maximum athletic performance, or reaching one’s full potential, can be quite a challenge. By consuming a high calorie weight gain shake, with the optimal caloric ratio, on a daily basis, building lean muscle mass is not only possible, but very much an obtainable goal.

As we age our bodies start to break down and lose the ability to produce collagen. Collagen makes up 30% of our body. It is the “glue” that holds our tendons, ligaments, skeletal muscles, hair, skin, nails, bones, and blood cells together. Around the age of thirty our body begins to break down and we lose about one percent of our body’s collagen per year, which results in sagging skin, wrinkles, and thinner hair. Our joints become stiffer and less flexible, our nails discolor and become brittle and break more easily. It is imperative to offset this process by adding collagen to your daily diet.

There are natural supplements available which contain liquid collagen protein that can be consumed on a daily basis to help improve hair, skin and nail appearance, support proper joint function, promote wound healing, and aid in weight loss. When choosing a liquid collagen protein, make sure that it contains Hydrolyzed Collagen protein for proper absorption, a blend of essential and non-essential amino acids, is carbohydrate and sugar free, and is sweetened with the all natural sweetener Stevia, which has zero impact on the glycemic index, making it 100% diabetic safe.

Biotin, which is vitamin B7, is another important nutrient for strengthening hair, skin, and nails. The signs and symptoms of biotin deficiency include hair loss that includes loss of eyelashes and eyebrows in severely deficient subjects. Some shampoos are available that contain biotin, but it is doubtful whether they would have any useful effect, as biotin is not absorbed well through the skin. Consuming 1500-5000 mcg of Biotin a day in capsule form is recommended for maintaining hair, skin, and nail health. Silica and Gelatin are also key ingredients in most hair, skin, and nail formulas. Silica strengthens the hair, and a person is less likely to suffer from split ends and dull looking hair. When taking silica, an individual will not have to spend a fortune on hair care products, as the hair will be healthier, stronger, and thicker. Gelatin is an essential building block for healthy hair, nails, skin and cartilage. Gelatin supplements are usually made from the collagen of animals. However, some Gelatin supplements are also made from seaweed, a great alternative for vegetarians wanting to gain the benefits of gelatin without the animal byproducts.

When choosing a hair, skin, and nail supplement make sure the product is 100% all natural and not synthetic. Cheaper brands often use synthetic products in their formulas and the human body can only process a certain amount of synthetic products in a 24 hour period, depending on how many synthetic products a person has consumed could determine if the hair, skin, and nails are fully benefiting from the from the supplement. 100% all natural hair, skin, and nail formulas are available in health food and vitamin stores that contain these key nutrients, in addition to a blend of vitamins and minerals to ensure proper absorption. These formulas are safe for both men and women and have no adverse side effects. Millions of Americans suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies due to poor eating habits, supplementing with one of these natural formulas can aid in preventing unhealthy hair, skin, and nails.

One of the main components of health and wellness is proper rest and recovery. After intense physical activity an adequate recovery period is required in order to increase lean muscle fiber count resulting in a reduction in overall body fat percentage. Studies have indicated that the majority of the population does not receive the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night that is vital for optimal recovery. Contributing factors to this include long work hours, increased responsibilities, and high levels of stress. Luckily, there are products available that contain a blend of natural vitamins, minerals, and herbs which help promote restful sleep and stress reduction.

Zinc Aspartate and Magnesium Aspartate when combined enhance muscle strength, endurance, and recovery from exercise. Taken before bedtime Magnesium and Zinc Aspartate, also known as ZMA, promotes deeper, more restful sleep, which is when maximum healing, and muscle growth takes place. To ensure proper absorption ZMA is recommended to be taken 30-60 minutes before bedtime on an empty stomach. Valerian extract may be beneficial to health by reducing physiological reactivity during stressful situations and can be helpful in reducing anxiety. Passionflower, Tryptophan, Ashwagandha, Theanine, 5-HTP and Kava are additional herbs and nutrients that helps calm nerves which can promote restful sleep. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is the most common brain neurotransmitter that allows us to relax. Gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA is an amino acid produced in the brain. It is a natural tranquilizer that increases the level of Human Growth Hormones (HGH) which is vital for all human beings. Free from unusual side effects, GABA prevents after effects like drowsiness and lethargy. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body's circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is an internal 24-hour “clock” that plays a critical role in when we fall asleep and when we wake up. When it is dark, your body produces more melatonin; when it is light, the production of melatonin drops. Being exposed to bright lights in the evening or too little light during the day can disrupt the body’s normal melatonin cycles. Studies suggest that melatonin supplements may help people with disrupted circadian rhythms (such as people with jet lag or those who work the night shift) and those with low melatonin levels to sleep better. A review of clinical studies suggests that melatonin supplements may help prevent jet lag, particularly in people who cross five or more time zones.

Either taken by their self or combined, these key nutrients are a safe, natural alternative to prescription sleep aids which can cause harmful side effects. Not receiving enough rest increases fatigue levels and the odds of skipping workouts. A good night’s sleep could be the difference between reaching your fitness goals and falling short, so make sure and get plenty of rest, practice proper nutrition, and exercise often.

Millions of Americans suffer from chronic fatigue, depression, loss of sex drive, a decrease in lean muscle mass/strength, and an increase in body fat percentage, all a result of low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a sex hormone that is predominant in males, which is the main reason why males are, on average, bigger and stronger than females; however females do produce testosterone and are more sensitive to the hormone. Recent studies have shown that natural testosterone therapy can help prevent osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression, and various other serious health issues. There are products available that contain a blend of herbs and supplements that naturally increase testosterone levels by signaling the anterior pituitary gland to secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) in males, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in females, which in turn promotes testosterone production.

The main ingredient in most natural testosterone supplements is the herb Tribulus. Tribulus is most often used for infertility, erectile dysfunction, and low libido. In the last decade, it has become popular to improve sports performance. The active chemical in Tribulus terrestris is protodioscin ( PTN ). The active compounds are called steroidal saponins. Research performed in Bulgaria and Russia indicated that tribulus increases levels of the hormones testosterone (by increasing luteinizing hormone), DHEA, and estrogen. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) has been used clinically as a pharmaceutical agent in the treatment of hypogonadism as well as to increase fertility. hCG works by activating the Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin (LHCG) receptors of the pituitary gland. The activation of these receptors causes the body to release a large surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland, similar to the onset of puberty. It then sends a chemical signal to the testes to increase steroidogenesis (production of androgen hormones) and sperm production in males. A Reduction in overall body fat has also been shown with hCG use, resulting in the widely popular hCG diet that is being prescribed by doctors. When choosing a natural hCG supplement, whether the reason is for increasing free testosterone levels or losing fat, make sure the hCG is in sublingual pellet form that dissolves under the tongue, and not the liquid droppers. The efficacy of the hCG is lost in liquid form and the hCG will not fully absorb into the bloodstream.  Another popular ingredient in natural testosterone boosters is Ovine Placenta Powder which contains high concentrations of Equine Chorionic Gonadotropin (eCG). The eCG in Ovine Placenta Powder acts as an orthologous hormone to hCG and causes the same LH surge and increase in both testosterone and fertility. Eurycoma longifolia extract, commonly reffered to as “Longjack”, has the capacity to reverse the inhibitory effects of estrogen on testosterone production and spermatogenesis and has an effect similar to testosterone replacement therapy in counteracting ostereoposis.

Serious health issues, such as prostate cancer, have been associated with low testosterone counts.  Combining these key nutrients together could help relieve symptoms of decreased testosterone and improve one’s quality of life. At 30 years old, male testosterone levels drop by one to two percent annually, supplementing with a natural testosterone enhancer to reverse this process just might be the ticket to the fountain of youth!

Millions of people suffer from joint pain and discomfort every day, however there are formulas available that contain a blend of natural supplements and herbs that can relieve pain and help regenerate connective tissue and cartilage. The main ingredients in most joint formulas are Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM. Glucosamine is a precursor to glycosaminoglycans; glycosaminoglycans are a major component to joint cartilage. Chondroitin is often taken in conjunction with Glucosamine and has been shown in studies to increase its effectiveness. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) helps to ease tendon and ligament pain and is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. Shark Cartilage contains complex carbohydrates called mucopolysaccharides which relieve pain and inflammation. Hyaluronic Acid lubricates the joints and can even cushion joints with minimal or no cartilage. A combination of these preventative supplements will reduce further cell damage and repair connective tissue.

Fast acting over the counter medication such as Ibuprofen (Advil) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) are often used to relieve pain, however there are many adverse side effects associated with consuming these products on a daily basis. Ibuprofen can inhibit prostaglandin production; prostaglandins produce the mucus that line the stomach which prevents stomach acid from burning holes into the stomach’s lining resulting in bleeding ulcers. Acetaminophen has been shown in studies to damage the liver in large doses. There are natural herbs and enzymes available that act as an anti-inflammatory and can be taken daily to reduce inflammation and swelling of the joints. Holy basil, Tumeric, Ginger, Boswellia, and Bromelian are safe and effective, do not cause adverse side effects, and can be taken every day for pain. Black Cherry extract is a natural anti-inflammatory that is great for curing the Gout and relieving pain associated with arthritis.

Combining Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM with Tumeric, Ginger, Boswellia, and Bromelian creates a formula that is not only preventative but also corrective in nature. Joint pain and inflammation can be a major deterrent in starting an exercise regime. Make sure and supplement your diet properly with these key nutrients to ensure that your work out is pain free, enabling you to live a healthy lifestyle.

This month we wrap up a three part series dedicated to losing weight and feeling great for the New Year, by addressing an important issue, losing weight without the use of stimulants or supplements that could elevate heart rate, blood pressure, or bad cholesterol. A large amount of the population is currently taking prescription medications for various health reasons and cannot consume products that contain these types of ingredients. Luckily, there are products available that have a blend of essential fatty acids, cortisol blockers, diuretics, and natural herbal metabolism boosters, that are caffeine free and will not stimulate the nervous system.

Fucoxanthin has been shown in recent studies to promote fat burning within fat cells in white apidose tissues around your midsection, it does this by increasing thermogenin, utilizing adipose fat as fuel. Omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acids support healthy cholesterol levels, improves oxygen diffusion into the blood stream, boost energy production, and reduces water retention. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in doses of 300mg, has been shown to burn fat, and in doses of 4500mg, it has been shown to build lean muscle mass over time, complimenting your workouts. It can also contribute to greater heart health in combination with a healthy diet and exercise program and higher good cholesterol (HDL) levels coupled with lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. The combination of CLA with sesamin increases the activity of several liver enzymes that break down fatty acids. Sesamin lignans also boost the weight-loss effects of CLA. The combination of CLA and sesamin is also effective in lowering serum triglycerides. Safflower oil has been shown in studies to block belly fat hormones, such as cortisol, and may reduce fat without exercise. Phosphatidylserine, also reffered to as PS 100, when taken in doses of 800mg or higher can help block cortisol resulting in a reduction in mid-section fat accumulation. Also, PS 100 has been demonstrated to speed up recovery, prevent muscle soreness, improve well being, and possesses ergogenic properties. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) can help in the process of excess calorie burning, and thus aid in weight loss. Dandelion root extract is primarily used to prevent water retention and bloating, therefore providing a leaner physique. 3,5-Dihydroxy Phenylacetate is a precursor to thyroid hormones that increase resting metabolic rate (RMR) or basal metabolic rate (BMR). When BMR is increased the body burns more calories, thus resulting in weight loss. 3,5-Dihydroxy Phenylacetate is stimulant free and safe to take with thyroid medications due to the fact that it naturally increases your thyroid hormone production.

When combining these all natural ingredients with a low glycemic diet, consisting of 5-6 smaller meals spread out throughout the day, the odds of losing weight and reducing overall body fat % greatly increase. Many formulas are now available that have a combination of these key nutrients to ensure that fat cells are being burned for energy instead of being stored. Taking advantage of the use of one or more of these supplements could be the extra help that you need in reaching your goal weight and achieving success in your New Year’s resolution!

Last month we discussed the advantages of starting a New Year resolution program for losing weight by naturally detoxifying and cleansing the entire body to remove toxins and excess calories that were consumed during the holidays. A complete body cleanse kit helps promotes weight loss and overall health, while preparing your body for a fresh start to begin a new healthy lifestyle. This month we are going to compare and analyze the most effective ingredients that increase thermogenesis (the process of heat production in organisms) and boost the body’s metabolism naturally. When thermogenesis occurs, calories are burned at a faster rate resulting in weight loss. We have all heard that in order to lose weight one must consume less calories in their daily diet and burn more calories by increasing physical activity, however there are products available that have a blend of natural herbs and supplements that help burn more calories at rest resulting in an increase of the RMR (resting metabolic rate). Combining these key ingredients with a low calorie meal plan, and a daily regime of exercise will increase the odds that more calories are burned than consumed in a 24 hour period, this is how weight loss occurs.

Green tea has been shown in studies to have many health benefits, including weight reduction. Green tea induces thermogenesis and stimulates fat oxidation, boosting the resting metabolic rate by 4% without increasing the heart rate. Garcina Cambogia has been gaining popularit lately due to its high concentration of Hydroxycitric Acid. The Hydroxycitric Acid found in Garcinia Cambogia has several different effects on the body. The most notable of these effects is its ability to inhibit the uptake of carbohydrates that are stored in the body as fat. By prohibiting the fat storage, the carbs are burned as energy thereby increasing energy levels and decreasing fat levels. HCA also works to prevent cravings for sugar heavy and carbohydrate heavy foods, balance the blood sugar levels, and increase the sertonin levels in the brain which signal to us that we are full faster. Apple Cider Vinegar is an “old school” remedy that is great for preventing diabetes, curbing appetite, and increasing energy levels. Kelp, which is a natural source of iodine, promotes proper thyroid function, resulting in an increase in metabolism. Evodiamine, which is extracted from the Evodia plant, increases resting core temperature and body heat resulting in more calories and fat being burned for energy. Yohimbe is great for increasing thermogenesis and energy levels while boosting RMR and promoting fat loss, it has also been linked to natural virility enhancement as well. N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is a more absorbable form of the amino acid L-Tyrosine which aids in energy production and increases core-thermogenisis. Bitter Orange Extract, commonly referred to as Synephrine, is a popular alternative to Ephedrine or Ephedra, due to its ability to burn fat without the adverse side effects of ephedra, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, etc., it also is great for naturally increasing energy levels throughout the day. Combining caffeine and white willow bark with these ingredients has been shown in studies to increase their effectiveness.

Finding an all natural product that has a blend of these nutrients can help increase the amount of calories that are burned ultimately resulting in a reduction in body mass. Adding a natural fat burner and metabolism booster to your daily regime is a great way to “kick start” a weight loss program or get past a “sticking point” or plateau to obtain desired results. Remember to consume plenty of water and always begin with a low dose to access personal tolerance levels. Next month we are going to continue this series dedicated to losing weight and feeling great for the New Year and discuss the benefits of supplementing with essential fatty acids and non-stimulant alternatives for weight loss.

This Month we begin the first segment of a two-part series dedicated to weight loss for a fresh start to the new year. Millions of Americans will be consuming processed foods and calorie filled meals during the holidays over the next month and a half, one way to stay a step ahead of the game is to naturally cleanse the body before and after holiday binge eating. Detoxifying all the major organs with a complete body cleanse will help prevent undesired weight gain and flush out toxins. Many 100% all natural cleanse kits are available that contain ingredients that will cleanse the colon, digestive system, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs. When choosing a cleanse be careful to read the ingredients closely to make sure that is has the necessary blend of fiber, herbs, diuretics and natural laxatives to ensure that the entire body is completely purged of unwanted toxins and chemicals that have built up over time.

Psyllium Husk is a popular source of fiber in most cleanses packs that maintains proper GI (gastrointestinal) function and relieves constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and diarrhea. Flaxseed oil promotes regularity and helps to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) while increase good cholesterol (HDL). Aloe Vera and cape aloe aids in digestion, soothes stomach discomfort and is a vital component in maintaining a healthy colon. Black Walnut oxygenates the blood to kill parasites and is anti-fungal. Goldenseal and dandelion root are used as a natural diuretic to help flush excess subcutaneous water from under the skin. Senna leaf extract is a natural herbal laxative that is commonly used in cleanser kits to aid in a full body flush. These key ingredients should be the foundation of a proper natural cleanse.

The most common length of time to perform a natural cleanse is one week. During this time period it is recommended that a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables is consumed and to limit the intake of simple carbohydrates (sugar) and saturated fats. Fried foods should be avoided all together as well as red meat. A low calorie, low carbohydrate, and low fat protein shake is acceptable as a substitute to high protein meals such as chicken, fish, or beef during the week long cleanse. A 100% whey isolate protein shake is recommended due to its high absorption rate and is easily dissolved in water. At least six to eight ounces of water should be consumed eight to ten times daily for a minimum of seven days. Limit alcohol consumption to decrease the chance of dehydration while on a cleanse due to the natural diuretics included in most cleanse packs.

Five to ten pounds of weight loss is common with most natural seven day cleanse kits, making it a great way to “kick start” a weight loss program for the New Year. Remember to keep calorie dense meals to a minimum during the holidays and the cleanse will be even that more effective. Check out next month’s supplement review for part two of the weight loss series dedicated to losing weight and feeling great for the New Year!

Multi-vitamins are used by millions of people everyday to help supplement
their diet of the reccommened daily allowances of vitamins and minerals. However,
there are many different types of multi-vitamins available to the public, so which
one to use can be quite a dilema. Studies have shown that a 100% all natural multi-
vitamin has a higher absorbtion rate than the more popular synthetic multi-vitamins,
such as centrum and one a day. While taking one pill a day may be more convenient,
and inexpensive, if the vitamins do not dissolve in the body's digestive system,
then what is the point in taking it?
100% all natural multi-vitamins that are derived from food and plant sources
are easily found in health food, and vitamin and supplement retail stores. Multi-vitamins
come in many forms, such as tablets, capsules, softgels, chewables, and liquid. Which
form is the best is highly debated. Most studies show that the liquid form is absorbed
the quickest, however the quicker the absorbtion is not always the better option, due
to the fact that the human body will only use the vitamins and minerals needed at
a given time and excrete the rest through the body's urinary tract as a waste product, which
explains the greenish yellow colored urine often associated with taking multi-vitamins.
Multi-vitamins that are absorbed over a longer period of time may have more benefits, so
don't throw out your "old school" tablets for softgels or liquid vitamins just yet.
Many doctors are now suggesting more natural alternatives for lowering cholesterol,
blood pressure, and balancing blood sugar levels, in addition to numerous other medical
conditions. Convienent all in one "vitapaks" are now available that contain a daily
pack of multi-vitamins, fish oil, and heart, bone, joint, and digestive support.
These Vitapaks are more affordable and more practical then purchasing five or six seperate
bottles of supplements. In this day and age consuming the daily reccomended allowances
of vitamins and minerals can be almost impossible through food alone. Taking natural
vitamins and supplements on a daily basis just might be the difference between leading a healthy
lifesytle and living longer as opposed to the alternative.

Many doctors are now suggesting a diet that is higher in protein to help prevent obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and various other serious health issues. Consuming a high amount of protein through food alone can be very difficult and quite expensive; however protein is now available in powder form to mix up in a “shake” which makes the protein more enjoyable to consume on a daily basis. These protein powders come in various flavors that can be combined with ingredients such as fresh fruit, fat free milk, and all natural peanut butters, to make a great tasting high protein smoothie. Many different types of protein are available to purchase in retail health food and vitamin stores. Soy, egg, casein, and whey protein are the most popular kinds of protein being used today, but which one is the best?

Soy protein is widely used by women wanting to increase their estrogen production; however this increase in estrogen can also lead to an increase in body fat percentage, so women wanting to tone up and men that already have a higher body fat percentage might want to avoid soy. Egg protein powder is highly absorbable and great for people that have milk, soy, and wheat allergies, although the taste can be quite undesirable at times, think back to Sylvester Stallone drinking a glass of egg whites in the movie “Rocky”, which is a pretty accurate description of what the after taste of egg protein powders are like. Casein protein, which is derived from milk protein, is a slow digesting protein that is ideally used in the evening as a night time protein powder. The average person sleeps for about six to eight hours each night, and if protein is not available during this period, the body will start breaking down muscle tissue to use as a protein source, which can lead to catabolism and loss of lean muscle mass which results in an increase in body fat percentage. A slower digesting protein, such as casein, can help prevent this from occurring.

Whey protein is without a doubt the most popular form of protein being used in protein powders today. Whey protein is digested quickly, tastes great, and helps repair muscle tissue after exercise. Whey protein increases lean muscle mass, which ultimately lowers overall body fat percentage. Whey protein powder will help keep the sensation of being full to avoid over consumption of calories and to curb appetite. There are two kinds of whey protein powders available, whey protein concentrate, and whey protein isolate. Studies have shown that 100% whey protein isolate has a much higher absorption rate than whey protein concentrate, so be sure and read the ingredients label on the back of the bottle when choosing the correct protein powder to be certain that it is 100% whey protein isolate and not a mixture of whey protein concentrate and isolate, which cheaper brands try to pass as whey protein isolate, by advertising whey protein isolate in bold all over the front of the bottle’s label. Also, which sweetener is used in the protein powder can directly affect your health. The all natural sweetener, Stevia, which is derived from the Stevia plant, has been gaining popularity with diabetics as of late due to the fact that it has a much lower glycemic index than sucralose (splenda) or aspartame, and has no effect on blood glucose levels, which will help keep blood sugar levels balanced. A 100% whey protein isolate powder, that contains zero fat, zero sugar, zero cholesterol, and that is sweetened with stevia is currently the best choice for losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Consuming a blend of key nutrients the minutes following physical activity is a vital component of any training routine regardless of whether the main objective is to lose weight and decrease body fat or to gain muscle and strength. Replenishing the body with the proper ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat along with BCAA’s (branch chain amino acids), creatine, Glutamine, cortisol blockers, and antioxidants can help speed up recovery time in between workouts, reduce soreness, and increase lean muscle mass by preventing catabolism. Catabolism, which is the breakdown of muscle tissue for use as an energy source, can lead to the release of cortisol by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can have catabolic effects on the body by storing fat, which can increase overall body fat percentage and decrease muscle mass. Preventing the release of cortisol can be achieved by restoring glycogen in the form of carbohydrates to muscle cells for the body to use as energy thus preventing the breakdown of lean muscle tissue. Also, consuming a highly absorbable form of protein, such as whey protein isolate with a proper amino acid profile, can help increase protein synthesis after exercise by repairing and increasing the amount muscle tissue in the body which decreases overall body fat percentage. A recent study showed that chocolate milk has the ideal ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat for post-workout recovery; however your favorite brand of chocolate milk does not contain the amino acids, creatine, cortisol blockers, and antioxidants recommended for maximum recovery.

When choosing a post-workout supplement, be careful to read the ingredients closely to make sure that the best quality creatine, BCAA’s, and cortisol blockers are being used. Cheaper brands often use creatine monohydrate or creatine ethyl-ester which is poorly digested and can cause water retention, bloating, and stomach discomfort. A PH correct creatine, such as Kre-Alkalyn and Magna Power creatine (magnesium creatine chelate), is highly absorbable and has a low acidity level which blocks the conversion of creatine to creatinine, which is a waste product that is filtered out the body by the kidneys. Branch chain amino acids (BCAA’s) in the alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) form can help increase protein synthesis at a faster rate than amino acids alone. Studies have shown that phosphatidylserine, often referred to as PS 100, when consumed in large amounts of up to 800mg or more, can help block the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol. Critical antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid, grape seed extract, and pomegranate can help prevent free radical and cell damage which is often associated with intense training.

There is a small window of opportunity after exercise, which ranges from the first few minutes following training for up to an hour, that the human body is in position to take advantage and utilize all of these key nutrients. Missing out on this window could be the difference between reaching personal goals and falling off track. Providing muscles with the proper post-workout nutrition is a must for anyone wanting to improve their physique and overall physical fitness, the clock is ticking, make it count.

Antioxidants and free radicals are words often associated with cancer and cell damage in newspapers, magazines, and on television, but what really are antioxidants and free radicals and what exactly do they do? Free radicals are damaging compounds that are produced in the human body by exposure to toxins and radiation, as well as by the metabolism after physical and emotional stress. Free radical damage can lead to inflammation, cardiovascular and nervous system damage, impairment of immune function, and even cancerous changes in cells. Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals and prevent cellular damage. So what are good sources of antioxidants and which antioxidants are best for fighting against free radical damage?

Alpha Lipoic Acid, often referred to as the universal antioxidant, is versatile water and fat soluble metabolic antioxidant that is a effective free radical eliminator. Alpha Lipoic Acid also helps aid vitamins C and E in their antioxidant activities. Quercetin is a naturally occurring bioflavanoid and possesses powerful antioxidant properties and, like other bioflavonoids, has the ability to stabilize cell membranes, which makes Quercetin great for boosting the immune system. Pycnogenol, also known as pine bark extract, is a free radical scavenger, which can help reverse the aging process and well as immune and cardiovascular system function. Resveratrol is a polyphenol naturally found in the skin of red grapes, studies have shown that resveratrol supports healthy cardiovascular function and can help lower LDL (bad Cholesterol). Lutein is a powerful antioxidant that supports macular health and protects the skin and eyes from the damage induced by UV light.

Many “Super Fruits” have been gaining popularity in the last few years as good sources of antioxidants. The Noni, Goji, Acai, and most recently Maqui berry, have been shown in studies to have very high ORAC values. The ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) scale is used to measure the level of an antioxidant’s chemical potency and ability to prevent free radical damage. The Noni, Goji, and Acai berry have an ORAC value of approximately 30,000, while the Maqui berry has an ORAC value of 94,500! Which gives it 3x more free radical fighting ability than any other super fruit. In addition to neutralizing free radicals, these super fruits can also help promote weight loss, increase energy levels, boost strength and stamina, and support healthy aging. There are many antioxidant blends available that contain these super fruits, as well as resveratrol, aloe vera, and vitamins and minerals. Prevention, not correction, through exercise and proper nutrition is the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and living longer, natural antioxidants just might be the answer.

Without a doubt the most popular trend in the vitamin and supplement industry in the last five years has been the introduction of a blend of nutrients that are consumed prior to physical activity to improve performance during exercise. This blend of supplements is commonly known as a “pre-workout.” Available in both, pill and powder form, a pre-workout consist of a wide variety of amino acids, vasodilators, and herbs that increase energy, strength, and mental focus. A vasodilator widens the blood channel which allows more oxygen and nutrients to flow freely to the muscle being worked in a particular exercise, this helps improve vascular function as well as promotes a defined and tone appearance. Branch chain amino acids, commonly referred to as BCAA’s; help increase lean muscle mass which will lower overall body fat %, they also reduce fatigue and lactic acid accumulation to allow more intense training for longer periods of time. Herbs such as, Ginkgo Biloba and vinpocetine, are used to help increase blood flow to the brain and improve mental awareness and focus while exercising. Some pre workout mixtures may contain natural stimulants such as caffeine and synephrine, to increase energy; however there are non-stimulant pre-workouts available.

One of the most controversial ingredients in most pre-workouts is creatine. Creatine enhances ATP production in skeletal muscle and promotes cell volumization as well as increases fast-twitch muscle fiber output which can help improve strength. The human body has a certain amount creatine naturally stored in its muscle, supplementing creatine before exercising ensures that the muscle is fully saturated which will help keep high levels of energy available for intense workouts. Cheaper brands of pre-workouts use creatine monohydrate in their formula, which has been shown in studies to cause water retention, bloating, cramping, and dehydration. Creatine monohydrate has a high acidity level which can cause it to convert to creatinine which is a waste product filtered out by the kidneys. When choosing a pre-workout product, a ph correct creatine, such as kre-alkalyn or magnesium creatine chelate, should be the creatine of choice, because it has a low conversion rate to creatinine and does not cause water retention or stomach discomfort.

Another popular ingredient in pre-workouts is Citrulline Malate, which blocks the conversion of the amino acid L-Arginine to ammonia, which is a waste product in the body. L-Arginine is the main vasodilator used in pre-workouts that forces blood into the muscle being worked during a particular exercise, this helps to create a tight feeling in the muscle that is often referred to as the “pump.” L-Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-Arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid calcium are the two most common forms of L-Arginine used in pre-workouts; they reduce muscle fatigue and have a higher absorption rate than L-Arginine alone. Beta-Alanine, a naturally occuring amino acid, buffers lactic acid production which reduces the burning sensation in muscle associated with high intensity training. Beta-Alanine can also cause a warm sensation in the muscle that increases thermogenesis and produces a higher amount of perspiration while exercising, which excretes the subcutaneous water from under the skin and creates a leaner appearance. Be careful to read the ingredients closely when choosing a pre-workout supplement to ensure proper absorption of the key nutrients that are a vital component to achieving a desired physique and to lead a healthy lifestyle.
